Red Squirrel Appreciation Day (January 21)
The UK Squirrel Accord works collaboratively to preserve the UK’s woodlands and secure the future of the red squirrel population. On Red Squirrel Appreciation Day, the organisation will publish its latest action plan and host a Twitterstorm to raise public awareness of red squirrel conservation issues and generally celebrate this endangered native mammal. To take part, share your red squirrel pictures and posts on the day between 9am and 11am using the hashtag #RedSquirrelAppreciationDay.
International Day of Education (January 24)
This celebration of education and its role as a driver for peace and development is now in its fifth year. It aims to push forward the global education movement and calls on world leaders to stand by their commitments and prioritise investment in education.
Big Garden Birdwatch (January 27-29)
Join the many thousands of nature lovers who help the RSPB to monitor how the UK bird population is faring by taking part in the world’s largest wildlife survey. Pick an hour to count the birds that land in your garden or a nearby space and tell the RSPB what you’ve spotted. You can sign up now for a free guide.
National Storytelling Week (January 28 – February 5)
An annual celebration of the ancient art of oral storytelling organised by the Society for Storytelling, a small volunteer-run charity. Events are listed on the website and there are also free story-focused resources for anyone wanting to get involved.
