How to Celebrate Midwinter
From watching the sunrise on solstice morning to gathering greenery to decorate your home, we take a look at some timeless ways to celebrate midwinter.
How to celebrate midwinter

Midwinter has long been a time for celebration. As we approach the shortest day of the year, it is natural to hunker down and embrace creature comforts. It’s a time for slowing down, giving gifts and decorating our homes. It’s also a time to look forward to the promise of longer, lighter days ahead as we pass the winter solstice (December 21).

Fittingly. December’s full moon is known as the Long Night Moon or the Cold Moon.

Five ways to celebrate midwinter

  • Get out early on solstice morning to watch the sunrise, which happens at around 8am.
  • Head out for a walk to gather greenery for your home. Check out Helen Keating’s guide to foraging for festive decorations at The Woodland Trust.
  • Get cosy with your favourite hot drink and take a moment to notice the setting of the sun on the shortest day. Alternatively, wrap up warm and head out for a walk at dusk.
  • Enjoy a candlelit winter feast with loved ones. It’s hard to go wrong with a hearty soup made with seasonal veg, or you could try this recipe for a warming chickpea and coconut curry from The Imperfect Nutritionist.
  • Bring light into the dark with candles and lanterns or sparkling fairy lights.
