WHAT’S ON – APRIL 2023
Protect Our Living Legends
There are more ancient oaks in the UK than in the rest of Europe combined. However, unlike our historic monuments and heritage sites, most of the UK’s ancient trees have no legal protection. The Woodland Trust is trying to change this. You can help by signing the petition calling for improved laws to keep the UK’s ancient trees safe. You can also add trees to the Ancient Tree Inventory in order to help the charity map and protect our tree heritage.
World Creativity & Innovation Day (April 21)
World Creativity and Innovation Day (#WCID) celebrates creativity in all its forms and aims to raise awareness of its role in all aspects of human development. This includes the creative industries, which according to the United Nations, “are among the most dynamic sectors in the world economy, providing new opportunities for developing countries to leapfrog into emerging high-growth areas of the world economy.”
International Mother Earth Day (22 April)
International Mother Earth Day is a chance to reflect on how humanity has been treating the planet and how Earth is facing a triple crisis of climate disruption; nature and biodiversity loss; and pollution and waste. In the words of António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations: “Let us make sure our leaders bring the ambition and action needed to address our triple planetary emergency. Because we have only one Mother Earth. We must do everything we can to protect her.”
Fashion Revolution Week (April 22 – 29)
Fashion Revolution, the world’s largest fashion activism movement, is calling for an end to human and environmental exploitation in the global fashion industry. The theme for this year’s #FashionRevolutionWeek is ‘Manifesto For a Fashion Revolution’. Read their ten-point manifesto here.
BOOKS
Feeling ‘Blah’? by Tanith Carey
Though Tanith Carey wasn’t depressed, and on paper her life looked great, she felt a sense of disconnect. It was as if the world no longer seemed to be “in glorious technicolour and more in a palette of muted greys”. As an author and writer, she set out to discover if there was more to these feelings of ‘blah’, and discovered that this state of being has a name: anhedonia (from the Greek term for ‘without pleasure’). In her new book, she delves into the science behind anhedonia and finds that there are plenty of practical and evidence-backed ways to get feelings of joy flowing again. Published by Welbeck Balance on April 13 (£16.99).
